Fun with a 100s chart

Do you have a 100s chart at home? Maybe your kids use one in the classroom? To be honest, it often sits on a wall, looking pretty boring and then is an unused resource. That’s no fun. Here’s a few ways to make use of this resource, with some fun activities your kids will love.

100s chart activities

Off the chart

Turn a 100s chart into a board game. This one is adapted from one of our Brilliant Boxes, but you can use a 100s chart, a few counters and a 6-sided die then make up your rules.

Skip counting

Skip counting

This pic is straight from my son’s Level 2 Brilliant Box. It’s actually perfect for him, as it contains lots of resources to help him with his skip counting that he’s doing in the classroom right now. He finds skip counting easy when it starts at ‘0’, but it gets trickier when, for example, you say, “count by 3s, but start at the number 4.” A 100s chart makes it much easier for visual learners. Just mark the starting point, then count up, colouring as you go. Are your kids doing skip counting? Our current Level 2 Brilliant Box is full of activities using 100s charts.

Place value

Place value

Here’s a very simple way to introduce place value and counting by 10s and 1s. No bulky or expensive resources – just a 100s chart and coloured paper! A great, visual activity for kids. Use the longer strips of coloured paper to represent ’10s’ and the small squares for the ‘1s’.

Chart chunks

Fill in the missing numbers in these ‘chunks’ from a 100s chart. It can be done solo as some counting revision, or made into a game with a couple of players . . . if you have competitive siblings! We’ve actually used it at the family dinner table :)
