Go, Dog. Go! was written in 1961, but has certainly not lost any of its appeal. This is yet another book I had as a child and when we stumbled across it in a second-hand bookstore in Clunes, Victoria, just this weekend, I knew my son (just starting his first year of school) would love it!


This is a book written for beginning readers, but unlike other books of its kind, this is genuinely fun to read! The repetition necessary at this level is worked into the text and, whilst being fabulous for practising sight words, your child won’t feel as though that’s what they’re doing.

The book follows dogs of all shapes, sizes, colours and personalities as they travel towards a big dog party in a tree. There isn’t a great deal of plot, but there is a lot of fun to be had.

Why I love it:

This is, quite simply, a fun book. What child doesn’t love talking dogs who wear funny hats, drive cars and play tennis on the top of blimps? The pictures are bright and engaging and as a child, I remember being mesmerised by the image and the idea of the party in the tree.

My son, as I said earlier, only got this book on the weekend, but he is already delighting in being able to read many of the words himself. He is practising and building confidence in a super-fun way.

Themes to discuss with your child:

There really aren’t a lot of themes within this text, but that should not put you off. This is a book designed to increase reading vocabulary. Each page has sight words included and there is a good deal of repetition of these words. There are also lots of positional words used (under, over, in, out, on etc.) which will give your child a head start in their maths work.

Questions to ask your child:

Before reading:
  • What do you think this book might be about?
  • Do you think this is a fiction book (a story) or a non-fiction book (facts)?
  • Is this a book you want to read? Why/why not?
  • Where do you think the dog is going?
  • Which word/s on the cover, say ‘Go’?
  • Which word says, ‘Dog’?
  • Does the dog on the cover look as though he is taking his time to get somewhere, or is he in a rush? What makes you think this?
After reading:
  • Did you enjoy this story? Why/why not?
  • What was your favourite page?
  • Did you recognise any of the words in the book?
  • Can you look back over the book and see if you can read any words to me?
  • If you had to be one of the dogs in the book, which one would you choose? Why?
  • If you were at the dog party, which activity would you choose to do? Why?
  • Let’s read the story again and see if you can read some of the words with me.
